Over the weekend, Lainey Wilson scored her 9th career number one song at country radio with her single “Somewhere Over Laredo.” The song was included on the deluxe edition of her 2024 fifth studio album, Whirlwind.

Lainey co-wrote it with her frequent collaborators Trannie Anderson, and Dallas Wilson, and Harold Arlen and Yip Harburg also received writing credits as the song interpolates the melody of “Over the Rainbow”, which was of course originally written for the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz and performed by Judy Garland.

Lainey’s co-writer, Trannie, shared a post about the huge accomplishment on Instagram, where you can see “Somewhere Over Laredo” at the top of the Billboard U.S. Country Airplay chart, which is one of two charts labels use to officially track their songs performance, along with the Mediabase chart:

Lainey is coming off of a huge year, recently hosting the 59th annual CMA Awards, where she was also the biggest winner of the night, taking home the coveted Entertainer of the Year award in addition to Album of the Year for Whirlwind, and Female Vocalist of the Year, where she was up against Miranda Lambert, Ella Langley, Kelsea Ballerini and Megan Moroney.

And it was her speech for Female Vocalist of the Year that was quite memorable…

Lainey of course thanked Jesus, as well as her team and family, in addition to acknowledging all of the women she was nominated alongside of:

“It’s a good night. Thank you, Jesus. Thank you so much. My gosh, I was not prepared for this at all. But I will say, I’m so proud to be in this category with these women. Miranda, you have poured into me.

You have sat around a fire with me and told me what to do, what not to do, and it is because of women like you… I mean, Dolly and Reba, all of the ladies have poured into me. Hillary, you have poured into me, Barbara Mandrell texted me back there, has poured into me.

Jo Dee Messina texted me a three-minute prayer this morning lifting me up, and that’s what it’s about girls.”

Lainey went onto straight up call out the “folks that are sitting at home in your mama’s basement eating your Cheetos” who are “trying to pit women against each other,” saying they need to “find something better to do”:

“I just want to say, find those people that life you up and encourage you and pray for you, pray with you. Love on you, on the good days, on the bad days, all of it.

And for the folks that are sitting at home in your mama’s basement eating your Cheetos trying to pit women against each other, y’all need to find something better to do. “

I couldn’t have said it any better myself…

And in a recent interview with Bev Rainey on Country Nights Live, the Louisiana native revealed that the now iconic, “folks that are sitting at home in your mama’s basement eating your Cheetos” quote actually came from a recent conversation with the “weren’t for the wind” singer herself.

“I honestly think that came from a few days prior. I was talking to Ella Langley on the phone, and she’s one of my dear friends. And she said something about, ‘I am so sick of people online trying to pit me and you against each other.’  

And it kinda just came out… There were probably some people actually sitting in their mama’s basement, eating their Cheetos, listening to that, going, ‘Oh, she’s talking about me.’”

Lainey is one of the best in the business, and I think her character and heart comes through with everything she does.

She really is one of the good ones, and it makes it that much easier to cheer for her and I will always be happy to see her topping the country radio charts. Congratulations to Lainey and her whole team on another big hit, and here’s to many, many more.
