Jasmine Crockett Breaks Silence and Defends Her Controversial Vote Against Charlie Kirk Resolution, Igniting Fierce Debate.th

WASHINGTON – U.S. Rep. Jasmine Crockett was one of 58 Democrats who voted last week against a resolution honoring assassinated conservative activist Charlie Kirk and the Dallas congresswoman is making no apologies for it.

Crockett told CNN’s Dana Bash on Sunday she was disappointed nearly all lawmakers voting against the resolution were people of color.

“The rhetoric that Charlie Kirk continuously put out there was rhetoric that specifically targeted people of color and so it is unfortunate that even our colleagues could not see how harmful his rhetoric was specifically to us,” she said.

All Texas Republicans voted for the resolution, which honored the “life, leadership, and legacy of Charlie Kirk, whose steadfast dedication to the Constitution, civil discourse, and Biblical truth inspired a generation to cherish and defend the blessings of liberty.”

The resolution also condemned Kirk’s assassination and all political violence.

Three other Texas Democrats joined Crockett in voting against the resolution: U.S. Reps Veronica Escobar of El Paso, Sylvia Garcia of Houston and Al Green of Houston.

Three Texas Democrats joined Republicans in supporting the resolution: U.S. Reps. Henry Cuellar of Laredo, Vicente Gonzalez of McAllen and Lizzie Fletcher of Houston.

Three Texans were among the 38 Democrats who voted “present” on the resolution: U.S. Reps. Greg Casar of Austin, Lloyd Doggett of Austin and Julie Johnson of Farmers Branch. U.S. Reps. Marc Veasey of Fort Worth and Joaquin Castro of San Antonio were among the 22 Democrats who did not vote.

Kirk’s killing has touched off a fierce national debate about the responsibility political leaders have for rhetoric they use toward people with opposing views and the appropriate limits of free speech.

Republicans said Democrats who refused to vote for the Kirk resolution last week were hypocrites.

They highlighted how a similar resolution was approved unanimously over the summer condemning the assassination of former Minnesota state House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Monday criticized Democrats who did not vote for the Kirk resolution. Leavitt described the resolution as a “simple gesture of human decency” to condemn political violence.

“Many Democrats in elected office have now been totally captured by a radical fringe of the far left base who want to dehumanize every person they disagree with,” Leavitt said.

Kirk had sharply criticized Crockett during his Aug. 4 show while discussing the Republican Texas redistricting plan being considered at the time.

Kirk advised any men listening not to marry women like Crockett, calling her “smug, terrible, nasty, cruel, wrong, dumb.”

He played clips of Crockett in which she asserted the redistricting plan was racist and state lawmakers were continuing “an overemphasis of Anglo voices” in Texas.

Kirk described Crockett as promoting “white hate” and said she’s part of a sinister “great replacement” effort.

“Jasmine Crockett is just some circus act in that entire operation, but it’s definitely serious,” Kirk said. “You shouldn’t take what she says seriously. It’s just a joke. What she represents is very serious, which is the continued attempt to eliminate the white population in this country.”

Crockett cited Kirk’s “great replacement” comments as a reason she voted against the resolution honoring his work.

“I’m not honoring that kind of stuff, especially as a civil rights attorney, and understanding how I got to Congress, knowing that there were people that died, people that were willing to die, that worked to make sure that voices like mine could exist in this place,” Crockett said.

Despite her views on what Kirk had to say about race in America, Crockett has condemned his assassination and any political violence.

“Charlie Kirk should still be here,” Crockett said. “It should not have been that there was political violence that resulted because of the words that were coming out of his mouth.”

“They get very upset when I talk about white supremacy, but that doesn’t mean that somebody should then try to find a bullet or try to find a knife and harm me, not in America,” Crockett said. “That’s not who we are supposed to be.”

Bash asked Crockett about taking responsibility for rhetoric that could inspire mentally unbalanced people to act violently, playing clips of Crockett describing Trump as an “an enemy to the United States” and a “wannabe Hitler.”

Crockett said such language is aimed at making sure Americans understand history and the playbook of authoritarian regimes to chill the free speech of their critics and consolidate power.

Crockett’s appearance on CNN came the same day as a massive memorial service for Kirk in Arizona featuring remarks by Kirk’s widow, President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance.

U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz, R-Texas, recounted during his Monday podcast how attendees had tears in their eyes listening to Kirk’s widow say as a Christian she forgives the gunman accused of killing him.

Cruz described the memorial service as a revival and a celebration of Kirk’s life.

Cruz highlighted the millions who watched live streams of the service and said he hopes young people are inspired by Charlie Kirk’s example to pursue peace, a personal relationship with Jesus Christ and a family.

“Charlie’s life was a powerful testament to that, but I think Charlie’s death may have been an even more powerful testament to that,” Cruz said.
