Brock Purdy could be out longer than the San Francisco 49ers initially expected.
The 25-year-old Purdy missed Weeks 2 and 3 with a turf toe injury he suffered in the season opener against the Seattle Seahawks. Mac Jones played well in relief and led the 49ers to victories over the New Orleans Saints and Arizona Cardinals.
Though Brock Purdy returned in Week 4 against the Jacksonville Jaguars (a 26-21 loss), the same toe injury will keep him sidelined for tonight’s prime-time game against the Los Angeles Rams.
Unfortunately, the 49ers will have to prepare for another extended Brock Purdy absence.
Speaking on Prime Video’s “Thursday Night Football” pre-game show, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said that Purdy was “not close” to playing against the Rams at SoFi Stadium on a short week.
Additionally, Rapoport said that Brock Purdy could miss action behind Week 5.

“My understanding is that Brock Purdy suffered a setback in the loss against the Jaguars. Got hit the same way…came in, reported soreness, had an MRI. The MRI revealed an aggravation of that turf toe. Not major, major. But out tonight…considered week-to-week after this. They play the Bucs next week, he could miss that game as well.”

The 49ers’ 3-1 start is impressive considering the onslaught of injuries they’ve already dealt with. There’s still no timeline on when All-Pro wide receiver Brandon Aiyuk will return as he continues to recover from an ACL tear he suffered last year.
Superstar defensive end Nick Bosa also suffered an ACL tear in Week 3 that will keep him out for the rest of the year. Tight end George Kittle hasn’t played since suffering a hamstring injury in Week 1, and receivers Jauan Jennings (ankle/ribs) and Ricky Pearsall (knee) will both miss tonight’s game.
Brock Purdy Looked Shaky In His First Two NFL Games

Purdy has been one of the NFL’s best underdog stories since taking over as the 49ers’ starting quarterback in 2022, following season-ending injuries to Trey Lance and Jimmy Garoppolo.
But Brock Purdy is off to a sluggish start this season. Over his first two games, he has four touchdowns, four interceptions and a game-sealing lost fumble in Week 4 against the Jaguars.
There’s no quarterback competition in San Francisco. Purdy will definitely regain the starting job when he’s cleared to return, but the 49ers are sure fortunate to have a QB-friendly system under Kyle Shanahan which has made Mac Jones look like a Pro Bowler.
