Representative Jasmine Crockett, a Texas Democrat, has taken aim at Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, on Sunday for her shock announcement that she would be resigning from Congress following a falling out with President Donald Trump.

Newsweek has reached out to Greene’s and Crockett’s offices for comment via email on Sunday.

Greene had been one of Trump’s firmest allies within his “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement, but her resignation on Friday raises questions regarding the Republican Party’s cohesion ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

The Republican congresswoman’s ties with Trump have soured in recent months, and she had been outspoken in urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to release all of its files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Appearing on CNN‘s State of the Union on Sunday, Crockett was asked by host Jake Tapper what she made of Greene’s resignation and said, “Honestly, I was like, you’ve got to be kidding me. You’re on the other side of the president for one week and you can’t take the heat? Imagine what it is to sit in my shoes to not only be on the opposite side of him but to have people like her who are constantly fanning the flames of hate. Imagine what those threats look like when you are someone like me.”

Greene, a hard-right Republican who has supported Trump since before she was elected to Congress in 2020, was for several years one of the most aggressive MAGA supporters. Her relationship with the president came to an impasse in recent weeks after she campaigned for the full release of the Epstein files.

Trump abandoned his resistance to having Congress vote on the release of the Epstein files last weekend following criticism from Epstein’s victims and members of his own party. After a measure to release DOJ materials on Epstein was passed by Congress, Trump put his signature on the bill.

When asked by Tapper about Greene suggesting in her video resignation that her disagreement with Trump over the Epstein files was behind their breakup, Crockett said: “He’s upset with Thomas Massie [a Kentucky Republican] so he’s gone after him, he’s upset with [Lauren] Boebert [a Colorado Republican], he’s upset with any Republican that signed the discharge petition. But somehow they were able to weather the storm.”

The Democrat congresswoman continued: “This really speaks to the fact that Marjorie, who has been an instigator of a lot of the hate that we’ve seen that relates to the MAGA movement. I don’t know if she really fully understood how bad she was making it for other people and now that they’re doing it to her, I just got to ask how is it that they can stand and you can’t.”

President Donald Trump wrote in a post on Truth Social on Saturday: “Marjorie ‘Traitor’ Brown, because of PLUMMETING Poll Numbers, and not wanting to face a Primary Challenger with a strong Trump Endorsement (where she would have no chance of winning!), has decided to call it ‘quits.’ Her relationship with the WORST Republican Congressman in decades, Tom Massie of Kentucky, also known as Rand Paul Jr. because he votes against the Republican Party (and really good legislation!), did not help her. For some reason, primarily that I refused to return her never ending barrage of phone calls, Marjorie went BAD. Nevertheless, I will always appreciate Marjorie, and thank her for her service to our Country!”

Representative Thomas Massie, a Kentucky Republican, wrote on X: “I’m very sad for our country but so happy for my friend Marjorie. I’ll miss her tremendously. She embodies what a true Representative should be. Everyone should read her statement; there’s more honesty expressed in these four pages than most politicians will speak in a lifetime.”

Greene said her last day in office will be January 5, 2026.

Meanwhile, the DOJ now has 30 days to make public all material from federal investigations into Epstein, though it may withhold items tied to ongoing criminal inquiries.
